Current Practice

Michael’s practice focuses on tax disputes, capital gains tax, business sales and acquisitions and restructuring. He also acts in matters that deal with:

  • domestic income tax;
  • tax compliance;
  • tax training; and
  • tax due diligence.

Experience

Michael has a broad client base ranging from accountants and lawyers, small and medium business enterprises as well as high net worth individuals. He has provided a broad range of advice for these clients, including:

  • handling tax disputes including audits, objections and AAT and Federal Court litigation;
  • advising tax consolidated groups on their tax sharing agreements and entry and exit consequences;
  • providing tax expert reports for various product disclosure statements;
  • advising clients on structuring business sales, mergers, restructures and acquisitions so as to best take advantage of available tax concessions and tax rollovers;
  • providing advice on tax debt/equity rules;
  • advising on the operation and effects of the tax consolidation rules; and
  • providing advice on the application of various trust and company tax loss rules and inter-entity loan rules.

Qualifications

Michael has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University. He became partner in 2007.

Michael is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria, an associate member of CPA Australia, a fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia.

Prior to joining the firm, Michael worked in the International Tax section of a Big 4 accounting firm, specialising in consulting and compliance work for large multi-national organisations.
