Current Practice

Karl’s practice covers both the litigious and non-litigious areas of employment and industrial relations law.

Karl is skilled in giving strategic advice which is both compliant with legislation and practical. His current practice includes:  

  • providing advice and acting in litigious matters regarding terminations, employee discipline, unfair dismissals, equal opportunity, discrimination and sexual harassment claims;
  • drafting and advising on employment contracts, independent contractor agreements and other employment related instruments;
  • transfer of business;
  • employment audits and employment related areas of due diligence; and
  • bullying and harassment claims made by employees.
 

Experience

Karl's clients range from those that are state based to large companies which operate throughout Australia. He regularly deals with clients in the financial services, education and manufacturing sectors. Karl understands the issues which affect franchisors and franchisees.

Recent matters Karl has advised on include: 

  • preparing pro forma enterprise agreements to be rolled out by a national franchise to its franchisees;
  • acting in the Federal Magistrates' Court proceeding defending a claim of bullying under  the Federal discrimination legislation and a breach of the implied duty to act in good faith to an employee;
  • successfully defended an unfair dismissal claim brought by an ex-employee who was dismissed for bullying;
  • advising on and preparing letters of offer and enterprise agreements for a national retailer;
  • acting for an employer when defending a claim brought by an employee for misleading and deceptive representations under the Competition and Consumer Act; and
  • acting for an employer in relation to claim against an employee seeking damages for breaches of their obligation of confidentiality.

Qualifications

Karl has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University. He became partner in 2004.

Karl is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and its Litigation Section and a member of the Australian Human Resources Institute.​
