Garry has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from Monash University and became a partner in 2000. He is a fellow of CPA Australia and a fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia.
Prior to joining the firm, Garry worked at the State Taxation Office, ultimately as Commissioner of State Taxation. Whilst working there, he was heavily involved with administration of probate duty, gift duty, land tax, business franchise fees, pay-roll tax and WorkCare (now WorkCover) levy legislation. Later on, Garry had primary responsibility for drafting new legislative provisions, interpreting existing legislation, and formulating policy guidelines for its administration.
Following his service with the State Taxation Office, Garry joined chartered accountants, Ernst & Young. He held positions of Director of State Taxation Practice and Director of Employment Tax Services respectively. Over his 4.5 years at Ernst & Young, Garry managed 26 major assignments achieving savings of $20 million for clients and ongoing savings of $6.5 million per annum. These assignments covered fringe benefits tax, pay-roll tax, stamp duty, WorkCover, land tax and financial institutions duty issues.
