Immigration Update
02 April 2009

Immigration roundup for employers

This update provides guidance on the latest measures in relation to 457 temporary work visas announced on 1 April 2009 by the Minister for Immigration, Senator Chris Evans.  It also summarises other measures that recently have been or are about to be introduced in response to the economic downturn and the Government's desire to strengthen the integrity of immigration programs, in particular employer-sponsored programs.

Employers need to prepare themselves for these new measures if they want to employ overseas skilled workers now or when the economy picks up, and if they want to minimise costs, delays and other risks associated with their employment of overseas skilled workers.
