Environment & Sustainability Policy

Hall & Wilcox recognises that our community faces real and pressing environmental challenges. We acknowledge that we have an important part to play in helping to confront these challenges.

We demonstrate our commitment to the environment and a sustainable future in a number of ways, including:

  • using natural resources responsibly to minimise the environmental impact of our business;
  • continually striving to improve our environmental performance through training, engagement with staff and involvement with community bodies;
  • identifying and managing environmental risks within our operation and applying best practice principles to address those risks; and
  • implementing strategic initiatives to reduce our consumption of energy and paper.

Our goal is to significantly reduce the production of greenhouse gases, the depletion of natural resources and non-recyclable waste resulting from our business operations.

Hall & Wilcox is a member of the Australian Legal Sector Alliance (AusLSA).  AusLSA is an inclusive alliance of law firms who work collaboratively to promote sustainable practices across the legal sector.

Hall & Wilcox has obtained a sustainability and carbon report from an independent third party (Greenpass) in 2009 which measured the environmental performance of the firm. We have implemented the vast majority of the recommendations made in the Greenpass report.
Some examples of how Hall & Wilcox demonstrates its commitment to a sustainable future are:

  • in the 2010/11 financial year, each employee of the firm generated 2.76 tonnes1 of CO2 emissions which is a good result compared with our peers;
  • the firm offsets 20% of the emissions caused by the generation of electricity purchased by the firm;
  • about 60% of all paper used by the firm is 100% post consumer recycled paper; and
  • the firm’s staff have access to the Melbourne Bike Share Scheme (including helmets) to encourage staff to use bikes instead of taxis for short distance travel.

1According to the AusLSA Environment Consumption Calculator and not taking 20% electricty offset into account.
