Current practice

Karl’s practice covers both the litigious and non-litigious areas of employment and industrial relations law. He is skilled in giving strategic advice which is both compliant with legislation and practical. He is skilled in dealing with the following matters:
  • providing advice and acting in litigious matters regarding terminations, employee discipline, unfair dismissals, equal opportunity, discrimination and sexual harassment claims;
  • drafting and advising on employment contracts, independent contractor agreements and other employment related instruments;
  • transmission of business;
  • employment audits and employment related areas of due diligence;
  • WorkCover recovery proceedings; and
  • Comcare and issues arising from the Accident Compensation Act generally.

Clients and recent experience

His clients range from those that are state based to large companies which operate throughout Australia. Karl regularly deals with clients in the financial services, education and manufacturing sectors. He also acts for self insurers and government authorities in connection with workers’ compensation claims in both the state and federal jurisdictions. He understands the issues which affect franchisors and franchisees.

Recent matters Karl has advised on include:

  • advised on and prepared letters of offer and collective agreements for a national publicly listed financial institution;
  • acted for an employer when defending a claim brought by an employee for misleading and deceptive representations under the Trade Practices Act 1974; and
  • acted for an employer in relation to claim against an employee for breaches of their obligation of confidentiality.

Qualifications and personal affiliations

Karl has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University. He became partner in 2004.

Karl is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and its Litigation Section and a member of the Australian Human Resources Institute.
